Madrid, 2001. Plaza del Dos de Mayo, a bar called Pepe Botella, and three men whose names aren't the ones they give.
A man has been in Madrid six days with a canvas bag, a sheet of paper folded in four and a job: make it look like an accident. Across the Plaza del Dos de Mayo, inside the Pepe Botella, a Spanish intelligence agent counts tiles while he waits for a Mossad spy he knows from one blurred photo. The spy walks in, orders a whisky and asks him for a light. None of the three goes by his real name. And the man on the bench has just watched someone walk through that door he has spent nine years not thinking about.

Madrid was letting go of the Velázquez light
while its buildings savored
one last caress.
On a bench in that square sat a man nobody looked at.
He looked like nobody in particular.
